OVERDRAWN | 1. THE BORROWED LIFE | PASTOR MURIITHI WANJAU #OVERDRAWN
What if your biggest financial challenge isn’t simply how much money you earn—but who you trust with your financial future?

This September, we begin a brand-new sermon series, OVERDRAWN: When Today’s Choices Steal Tomorrow’s Freedom.

In Sermon 1, The Borrowed Life, Pastor Muriithi Wanjau takes us through the story of the Prodigal Son in Luke 15 and reveals something we can easily miss: this isn’t only a story about rebellion, forgiveness and coming home. It is also a powerful story about money, provision, choices and trust.

The younger son didn’t first lose his money in the far country. His journey began much earlier—when he stopped trusting his father’s timing and decided he wanted tomorrow today.

And sometimes, we can do the same.

One more loan.
One more upgrade.
One more commitment.
One more payment.

Not necessarily because we are reckless, but because we have become accustomed to building a life with little margin and borrowing from tomorrow to sustain today.

In this sermon, we explore:

Why you don’t have to be poor to be financially broke
How debt has become normalised in our generation
Why financial bondage can begin with distrust rather than borrowing
What the Prodigal Son teaches us about money and freedom
The difference between trusting the Father and choosing independence
Why borrowing can trade tomorrow’s freedom for today’s desires
How unexpected crises expose the foundations of our financial lives
Why every financial decision is ultimately a trust decision
How we can begin moving from financial pressure and bondage towards freedom

This message is not about shame or condemnation. Debt can come through poor decisions, but it can also come through painful circumstances—family responsibilities, medical bills, business challenges and unexpected crises.

Wherever your story begins, the Father’s heart is not to humiliate you.

He wants to lead you into freedom.

And just like the prodigal son, that journey can begin with one moment of honesty: “He came to his senses.”

So this week, before you spend, borrow, invest, upgrade or make another major financial decision, pause and ask:

Am I choosing trust or independence?

Because financial freedom isn’t simply measured by how much money you have. It is also revealed by how much you trust the Father with what He has given you.

Every financial decision is first a trust decision.
