In The Beginning...
Around 2003, Nairobi Chapel was a fast growing, non-denominational church in the center of Nairobi next to the University of Nairobi residential halls. Rapid growth had resulted in space constraints, and the church planned to relocate to a 14-acre plot of land in order to house all its ministries. But God had other plans! As the leaders prayed, they felt God was calling them to move not to one but to five different venues! The resulting churches would work together in a common vision to raise leaders and plant churches across the key cities of Africa and the world. Quintuplets
And so... in August 2005, the quintuplets were born and Mavuno Church came into being! Mavuno means harvest and right from the get-go, there was a desire to be a loving church that shared Jesus in attractive ways to the many young families and single adults in the greater Mombasa Road area. Muriithi Wanjau, who had been serving as Outreach Pastor at Nairobi Chapel became the lead pastor of Mavuno. On his dream team were Linda Ochola, who had also served on the pastoral team of Nairobi Chapel as well as Simon Mbevi, who until that time had been leading another Nairobi Chapel church plant. Kanji Mbugua, gospel artiste and producer came on as creative director, with his brief to help Mavuno define worship for the next generation. Na Bado!
Since then, we have seen much growth as a church, both in numbers and in maturity. Many people have come to Christ through Mavuno and many different ministries have been started. Our Mizizi and Harvest School of Prayer courses are already having a big impact across the body of Christ in Nairobi . We are humbled by all that God has done for and among us! And… we know that this is just a beginning… the best is yet to come!
